Our first team meeting.

8/10/9

The idea of the Industrial Revolution became hot topic. Although we where not around when the Industrial Revolution was at its high point, we can see the great effects of which it made in today society.

The Industrial Revolution started in the 18th century which carried all the way through to the 19th century. It had a huge effect on the cultural and socioeconomics conditions. The Industrial Revolutions spread though out United Kingdom, Europe, North America and then the rest of the world, every aspect of society had changed. With the Industrial Revolution brought machined based manufacturing. It started with textiles, then the development of iron-making and refined coal. They built steam engines which was a huge help with the railways and mine workings. This also had a huge effect of the agriculture allowing for faster ploughing and less middle man cost, because of the less people they need for seed distribution. With the Industrial Revolution came canals, and mainly the factory's and buildings being built in rows and columns.

We discussed looking in to both women's and men's wear. We also came up with questions to looking in to. What clothes did they wear?, What was the architecture like and can this be Incorporated in to the design?, look at the colour contrast between the countryside and urban side. We also talked about looking at transport and how it evolved. Our promoters discussed in class how the title industrial revolution was to direct and and needed to be broader. So they came up with THE ADVENT OF POWER AND MECHANIZATION, with heading as
Pastoral and Crafted
Slums and Squalor's
Power and Invention
Mechanization and Connection

The competition is on !

In our last post we talked about a live competition with a company called FAD www.fad.org.uk which our course is entering. There will only be 3 entry's from our course which must be collaboration, i.e promoter and designer or textile and designer.
when the project was explained to us it was very clear that the brief entailed a lot of experimenting with the fabric, so this is where our lecture thought i would be a good opportunitie to collaborate with the second year BA textile from the Arts University College of Bournemouth. They where going to arrange a day where we can get together and discus who out of the textile class wanted to collaborate and who didn't, as well as seeing there work and if it would fit in with what we had in mind. keep a look out for post on how this went.

'Outfit 1: Personal Memory will capture your memories as an individual. Look to your own
reminiscences, personal history and objects or garments which evoke recollection.

nation. Look to family history, cultural narratives, folklore or social history. Imagine the stories
behind objects or garments which embody collective memories.' (from the FDA website)
Our Teacher's pulled names out of a hat for which group we would be in. We where give 2 designers and 3 promoters. Kirsty and Emily being the 2 Designers and Heather, Amy, Izzy are the promoters.
